What is Soil Association?
The Soil Association is a charity based in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1946, it has over 27,000 members today. Its activities include campaign work on issues including opposition to intensive farming, support for local purchasing and public education on nutrition; as well the certification of organic food. It developed the world’s first organic certification system in 1967 - standards which have since widened to encompass agriculture, aquaculture, ethical trade, food processing, forestry, health & beauty, horticulture and textiles. The Soil Association is the UK's leading organic organisation, with over 200 staff based in Bristol and Edinburgh and working as certification inspectors across the country. The Soil Association's director is Helen Browning, who reports to the Council of Trustees. Today it certifies over 80% of produce in the UK
The Soil Association Certification Ltd inspect and award organic certification to farms and businesses that meet their organic standards. Any product sold as 'organic' must comply with strict rules set at UK, European and international levels. These rules (known as standards) assure consumers they are buying genuinely organic products that can be fully traceable back to the farm they orinate from. Soil Assosiation standards not only meet the UK government's minimum requitements but exceeds them - Especially in areas concering the environment and animal welfare. Soil Assosiation have also developed standards for areas not covered by government or EU regulations, these include conservation, fish farming, textiles and health and beauty care products. Soil Assosiation inspect each of their licensed farms and businesses to see if the company is still compiling to the correct standards.
